Contender or Pretender?

If we knew back in August that the records of the two teams this Saturday would be 4-0 and 2-2, everybody would have pegged NC State as the 2-2 team. So we have a little role reversal going on. The national media is starting to pick up on the Wolfpack and stories about us being the real deal are popping up everywhere. The university even plans to cash in on this publicity by soon unveiling a promotional campaign called “Man for All Seasons” about Russell Wilson. All this is great and a step in the right direction towards building a perennial Top 25 program, but if we really want to tell the country that we are legit this is the type of game that you have to win. Sorry, but I’m going to use one of the most overused sports clichés … this weekend we will find out if the Pack is a contender or a pretender.

Preview

The Hokies lead the all-time series 25-18-4 with most of the games occurring between 1900 and 1964. There have been 8 games in the semi-recent past (since 1986) and the Hokies lead those with a 5-2-1 record. Last year’s game in Blacksburg was an absolute disgrace as the Hokies gave us a good old fashioned 38-10 beatdown. They pulled all their starters and didn’t score any points in the 4th quarter so it could have been even worse. I almost always stay until the bitter end, but I was so disgusted by our team that I left the game midway through the 3rd quarter, by far the earliest I have ever left a State football game. Hopefully the Pack will have a little revenge factor on their minds.

Virginia Tech came into the season with high expectations being ranked in the Top 10 and a preseason favorite to win the ACC. A tough loss to Boise State in the opener sent them into a little tailspin as they followed that by losing to FCS James Madison … in Lane Stadium. They have played much better football over the last six quarters, but they still aren’t where most people thought they would be. Poor offensive line play has hurt the running game and thus really handcuffed the Tech offense. They’ve had to rely on long sustained drives since they haven’t been able to break the big ones and they have struggled mightily inside the redzone (only 9 scores in 18 redzone trips). With only four returning starters on defense they are still trying to find their identity and it feels like the special teams have been the victims of “Beamer Ball” more often than the culprits in recent years.

Players to Watch

QB Tyrod Taylor (#5) – the leader of the Tech offense. An athletic, mobile QB in the mold of former Hokies Michael and Marcus Vick. He is most dangerous in the vertical passing game and with his scrambling ability. He does struggle with the intermediate passes, but he’s one of those players that can put the team on his shoulders and single-handedly lead them to victory.

RB David Wilson (#4) – a smaller, more agile running back than ’08 starter Darren Evans (2nd team All-ACC) will probably have a bigger role filling in for the injured Ryan Williams. He’s a track guy with a 40 time of 4.29 tying him for the fastest guy on the team so he’s a dangerous matchup.

WR Jarrett Boykin (#81) – is the Hokie’s go-to receiver and big play threat. Last year his 20.9 ypc was 4th best in the country (Owen Spencer was #1 with a 25.5 ypc) and so far this year he’s improved that to 22.1 ypc which has him currently 9th best in country.

LB Bruce Taylor (#51) – has filled in for the injured starter Barquell Rivers this season and has been a beast for the Hokie defense. The first year starter has been a force on the pass rush and a tackling machine (leads the team).

CB Rashad ‘Rock’ Carmichael (#21) – the Hokie’s top defensive back and a leader on this young Tech defense. He led the Hokies in INTs last year (6) and again leads this year (2). He has 2 career INT returns for touchdown so he is a defensive playmaker. He will have his hands full with Russell Wilson and what is likely the ACC’s best receiving corps.

Tidbits

The Hokies have won 10+ games in 11 of the past 15 seasons under HC Frank Beamer including the past 6 straight. That streak is second in the country behind Texas (9). With the Hokies currently 2-2, a loss here would put that streak in serious jeopardy.

The Hokies have been to 17 straight bowl appearances. They also have 148 wins since 1995, third most in that time frame behind only Florida and Ohio State.

A battered lunch pail is the trademark of Virginia Tech’s tough defense. It symbolizes the blue-collar approach that DC Bud Foster has instilled in the Hokie D since he took over in 1995.

RB Ryan Williams (’09 ACC ROY and 1st team All-ACC) is expected to miss the game due to a hamstring injury that kept him out last week. He set the ACC freshman rushing record last year with 1655 yards and added an astonishing 21 rushing TDs. He blistered the Pack defense to the tune of 120 yards and 4 TDs.

The Hokies’ top returning tackler LB Barquell Rivers is definitely out for this game as he is still recovering from a torn quadriceps tendon sustained back during the Spring.

In his 13 seasons as a head coach, TOB has never started 5-0.

Despite the Wolfpack playing much better football and being the ranked team (#23 AP) in this one, Vegas still has us as a 4 point home underdog.

Prediction

Both the Hokies and Wolfpack have a lot to prove in this game so I expect both teams will come out playing with a lot of emotion. The winner will have a leg up in their respective ACC division race so I see a tough, hard-fought contest that could be one of the best games of the weekend. It could very well take extra time to decide a winner. If the Pack offense decides to show up, Virginia Tech could struggle to hang around. So far this season, however, we have shown that we don’t know how to put a game away when given the opportunity. If that’s the case again this week, whichever team plays better on special teams and in the redzone will come out the victor.

Fun VT Links

Over at Gobbler Country they’re having a little fun with our fans and our mascot.  The screenshot of our fans from the Georgia Tech game (pictured below) has a Jersey Shore reference so you know I have to link to it.  And they think our new wolfdog Tuffy is cute.  Awww, thanks guys!

At The Key Play they’re having a Photoshop competition with our mascots.  Not bad.  Here’s my Hokie Bird Photoshop response:

Of course I can’t leave out this gem (by Grey Blackwell/N&O) from the last time Virginia Tech traveled down to Carter-Finley.  Just one question … Do the Hokies have large talons?

Three Wolfpack Moon

Everybody knows about the legendary three wolf moon t-shirt that became an overnight internet sensation.  If not you can read up on it here and buy one at Amazon if you want.  Well I think it’s time for a new internet sensation and with the Pack sitting at 4-0 and ranked #23 in the AP Poll we should cash in on this national recognition while it lasts so I unveil to you the three wolfpack moon t-shirt.  This hand dyed tee shirt features a stunning screen print graphic of the Wolfpack Football team captains (Jarvis Williams, Nate Irving, and Russell Wilson) on a preshrunk, 100% cotton tee.  Dyed and printed by DFCF Graphics.  DFCF Graphics uses only environmentally friendly inks and dyes, to bring you an incredibly durable and comfortable garment.  Not really, this is just for entertainment only, but it would be a kick ass shirt.  These guys are to be commended for the leadership they’ve provided this young team so far.  They made sure the team believed in itself even after everybody, myself included, gave us no chance to really do anything this year.  Kudos fellas!  Keep up the good work!

Nerdiest Student Section Ever

Yeah that girl is reading a book in the middle of the game.  Not just any book either, it was The Elements of Moral Philosophy.  I was sitting in the NC State section right across the aisle from the Tech students and it was by far the nerdiest student section I have ever seen.  I’ll give Georgia Tech a little slack since this wasn’t the main student section, it was for the late arrivals and didn’t fill up until midway through the 1st quarter, but it was still pretty pathetic.  These students didn’t really know the fight song (or at least they weren’t singing it loud at all), they were reading books, and the majority sat down during the Budweiser Song (very disappointing).  Most of them looked like they had come out straight from the computer lab.

Some other random tidbits from my trip down to Atlanta.  The Varsity was jam-packed before the game and the burger and fries didn’t disappoint.  The Ramblin’ Wreck is a pretty cool ride.  College football games that take place in a big city downtown setting really put a damper on tailgating.  I ran into some college buddies at the game that I hadn’t seen in several years (all 3 are pictured here).  They were hitting the town Saturday night to celebrate the Pack being 4-0 and also for a little bachelor party festivities.  Too bad I couldn’t stick around and join in on the fun.  How can Georgia Tech, one of the nation’s top research universities and a leader in modern technology/innovation, still have troughs in the bathrooms at Bobby Dodd Stadium? Georgia Tech’s “whiteout” seemed real stupid since we were the team wearing all white uniforms.

It was a quick business-like trip for me as I didn’t do anything other than go to the game and cheer on the Pack.  I went down with low expectations and left Atlanta forcing myself to temper my new expectations heading forward.  With the win the Pack now stands at 4-0 and TOB is within one game of getting back to .500 for his tenure at State.  The TOB-O-METER currently stands at:

Georgia Tech Captions

Time for another edition of Pack the Caption.  Participation has not been what I hoped for so time for everybody to step it up a little.  I know I’m not the best caption writer on the planet so there has to be better ones out there.  Everybody get your creative juices flowing and show me what you got.  Regardless, I’m going to continue this for the rest of the season because it’s been fun.  Here’s this weeks photos (by Ethan Hyman/N&O).

Who's making fun of my Shake Weight® now? Ha!

Uncle! ..... I said UNCLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can't believe we chose this over studying for bioengineering class.

Georgia Tech Report Card

This was a very impressive performance all around.  We followed the “how to beat Georgia Tech” recipe to perfection.  We got ahead early and made them play from behind all game, forced them into passing situations on 3rd down, didn’t lose the turnover margin, minimized their big plays on offense, and made a huge special teams play.  You couldn’t have scripted it any better … well except that interception returned for touchdown early in the 4th quarter that cut the lead to 3 points.  The drive we had following that was the most clutch NC State drive of the TOB era.  If we don’t score we likely lose the game, but score we did and the Pack pulled out a very gutty ACC road victory.

Quarterback – Grade: C+

Russell Wilson had the TV announcers raving about him all game as he set a career high in passing yards (368 yards) and accounted for 4 TDs (3 passing and 1 rushing).  All over the internet you can read articles praising Russell, and rightfully so, but I can’t get past the terrible pick six in the 4th quarter.  We still won the game, largely due to Russell’s play before and after the pick, but a 3 year starter can’t make that mistake.

Running Backs – Grade: A

Mustafa Greene was impressive again (68 yards rushing, 1 TD & 4 receptions, 41 yards receiving), extending his streak of a touchdown in all four games of his young collegiate career.  Dean Haynes bounced back nicely from his terrible game last week (75 yards rushing, 34 yards receiving) and Taylor Gentry continues to be a force to be reckoned with on passes out of the backfield.

Receivers – Grade: A

This receiving corps has to be the best in the ACC and they played like it against the Yellow Jackets.  There were two drops that I remember, but that’s really all there was to critique.

Offensive Line – Grade: A-

Run blocking was very good, but we still have to do a better job protecting Russell.  There were several plays were miscommunication led to Tech defenders getting through untouched.  Russell is our meal ticket and we have to do a better job of protecting him.

Defensive Line - Grade: A+

They really dominated the line of scrimmage and clogged up all the blockers so our linebackers could run free and make plays.  Very impressive game from this unit.

Linebackers – Grade: A+

If there was any doubt that Nate Irving had lost a step due to the car wreck, he squelched all that talk with his performance (16 tackles, 4.5 TFL, 2 sacks) on Saturday.  All the other linebackers were great as well.

Defensive Backs – Grade: B-

Georgia Tech doesn’t throw the ball so the DBs weren’t really challenged much this game.  When they were, however, C.J. Wilson and Earl Wolff made a couple great plays to break up some passes, but we also had two breakdowns that led to big plays.  Going forward this unit has to tackle better and eliminate the busted coverages.

Special Teams – Grade: C

Asa Watson blocked a punt and Jarvis Williams recovered it for a TD.  That’s two straight weeks with a blocked punt, but the good stuff ends there.  Josh Czajkowski missed 2 chip shot field goals, Andy Leffler took over the punting duties (37.3 avg) and was no better than Ruiz, and our coverage teams were solid but not as good as they’d been in the previous 3 games.  This unit is still a huge liability.

Coaching – Grade: A+

To go into Atlanta and dominate the defending ACC champs the way we did earns kudos for the entire staff.  The redzone playcalling is questionable at times, but most of our other problems are not due to poor coaching, but rather poor execution.

We Are For Real

I’ve often told Mrs. DFCF that I loved her more after a Wolfpack win.  Unfortunately that hasn’t bode too well for her the past few years, but after today’s 45-28 win over Georgia Tech (improving the Pack to 4-0) Mrs. DFCF is getting love overload from me this season.  I admit that may sound a little extreme, but you know the feeling … when you’re winning it makes everything better.

I’ll admit I was totally wrong about this team … and it feels so good to say that.  This is a very good football team, but we still have a lot of areas that need work (e.g. kicking game, redzone offense, offensive line, and secondary) before we can step up to that next level.  Aside from being very good, this is also a fun team to watch because of the fact that they play with so much heart and effort.  I think it’s a little too premature for Wolfpack Nation to be talking about the ACC Championship Game, but we will definitely be bowling this year.  Now we need to just sit back, enjoy the ride, and see where this team takes us.  Go Pack!

Wolfpack Party

This isn’t really my kind of music so excuse me if I’m a couple months late on this.  A buddy just emailed me the link today and said it was a must have for our next tailgate.  Umm … I agree!  I’ve already downloaded it from the iTunes store.  Check it out and sing along like I’ve been doing all afternoon.

Week 4 Picks

I’m sure nobody’s sitting on the edge of their seat waiting for this, but it’s that time anyway, DFCF the Greek’s week 4 college football picks. I’m still struggling with a 2-7 record, so if that keeps up I’m just gonna bet against my own picks.  Hey any way to find an angle, right?  Last week I was 1-2 for the second consecutive week, but if you do that for a whole football season you’ll bleed yourself dry so it’s time to turn it around.  Let’s get to ‘em.

Oregon (-11.5) at Arizona State

Oregon has the nation’s #1 scoring offense (63 points/game) and #1 scoring defense (4.3 points/game) so I really don’t get why this line is so low.  Oregon is also 5-0 ATS the past 5 vs. Arizona State and 3-0 ATS the past 3 in Tempe.  Something definitely seems fishy here, but I just can’t take the Sun Devils even though I usually love a home dog.  This line should continue to go up so jump on it now.

Alabama at Arkansas (+7)

Alabama has played like the reigning National Champs they are so far this season, but I just have a feeling on this one.  That’s code word to go the other way, btw.  No really, Arkansas has the best QB in the SEC in Ryan Mallett and the “Wooo, Pig, Sooie” faithful have been waiting for this game all season.  I love taking home dogs, especially when I think they have a shot to win the game outright.  Wait this line out and jump on it when it goes above 7.

Kentucky (+14) at Florida

I watched Florida play last weekend and they got me a .5 point cover, but they didn’t really impress me.  Their offense is struggling so it’s hard for me to see them blowing out anybody right now.  They also have the big showdown in Tuscaloosa next weekend so I see this being a dangerous trap game.  Don’t get me wrong Florida is way better than Kentucky, but I think this game is going to be uncomfortably close for the Gators.  I’m not sure this line goes above 14, but if it does and you can wait it out, jump on it then.

Season Record: 2-7

I was above .500 with my leans last week (3-2) so maybe I’m on the uptick.  Here are my leans for this week:  Boston College (+4), Notre Dame (+4.5), West Virginia (+10), Oklahoma (-14), and NC State (+8.5).  Good luck!

House of Horrors

Superman has kryptonite.  Samson his hair, or rather his lack of hair.  And NC State has … Atlanta.  Our last trip to Atlanta was for an ESPN Thursday Night game in 2005 and the Pack was victorious 17-13, but before that we hadn’t won there since 1988 (7 straight losses).  Even with the win in 2005 our all-time record in Atlanta is a very subpar 3-10.  I don’t know what it is about Atlanta.  Maybe we OD on Coca-Cola or better yet get sick from trying those foreign Coke versions, which are all straight nasty.  It could also be that we get sucked into the athlete trap called the Gold Club (just kidding, but you should Google that).  No worries, it’s no longer around.  If it wasn’t those it had to be that we gorged ourselves at The Varsity, the iconic drive-in fast food restaurant right across I-85 from Georgia Tech’s campus.  Whatever it is, Atlanta has been a house of horrors for the Pack.  Let’s get to the game preview.

Preview

The Yellow Jackets lead the all-time series 17-9.  The first game between State and Georgia Tech was a 128-0 Yellow Jacket win back in 1918.  Georgia Tech is the reigning ACC Champs and this will be the first time we’ve play them since Paul Johnson took over and installed the triple option attack.  The triple option attack is so hard to prepare for because it’s so hard to replicate in practice.  It will negate the aggressive blitzing that has made our defense so tough this year and will force our defenders to be patient and stick to their assignments.  They will run the football all game (only 4 pass attempts last week), eat a lot of clock, and try to wear down our defense.  The way to beat Georgia Tech is to get ahead early and make them play catch up because their offense is not equipped to do that.  The way to get blown out by Georgia Tech is to get behind early and then they just eat up all the clock and you have no time to catch up.

Players to Watch

QB Josh Nesbitt (#9) – last year he was the 1st team All-ACC QB.  He throws probably the worst ball of all Div. 1 QBs, but it’s not his arm that makes him dangerous.  He is a tough nosed runner that runs Paul Johnson’s triple option to perfection.

RB Anthony Allen (#18) – a transfer from Louisville that teamed with Nesbitt and Jonathan Dwyer last year to become the most prolific rushing trio in Georgia Tech history.  He was banged up a little earlier in the season, but now he’s at full strength and his explosive running style makes him a threat to take one to the house at any time.

C Sean Bedford (#79) – last year was the 1st team All-ACC center and this year was selected to the preseason All-ACC team as well.  A former walk-on that is now the leader of the unit that paves the way for one of the most prolific rushing attacks in the country.

LB Brad Jefferson (#51) – led the team in tackles last year and currently leads the team this year too.  He is the leader of the Tech defense that is switching over to a 3-4 under new DC Al Groh.

DE Izaan Cross (#94) – was last week’s ACC defensive lineman of the week.  Is a young, high-effort guy that has been disrupting opponent’s backfields so far this year and making a lot of plays for the Tech defense.

Tidbits

Georgia Tech students have one of the most random traditions … the Budweiser Song (the 0:35 mark is where it gets good):

Georgia Tech is having a “White Out” for this game.

Back on October 7, 1916, Georgia Tech played in the most lopsided game in the history of college football as they beat Cumberland College 222-0.  Neither team made a 1st down all game.

The Georgia Tech coach for that game in 1916 was John Heisman, after whom the Heisman Trophy is named.

The Yellow Jackets have appeared in a bowl game in 13 consecutive seasons.

TOB is 0-3 in ACC openers since arriving at State.

Prediction

I’m not going to put out predictions with scores like I have so far this season, because I want to make sure that I never get to where I’m pulling for my predictions over my team.  I will still give my thoughts on what type of game I see playing out.  Before the season I thought this one would be an easy blowout win for the Yellow Jackets.  Now with the Pack sitting at 3-0 and the Yellow Jackets not looking as dominant as they did last year I have a totally different feeling about this game.  There’s no doubt this is going to be a very tough game for the Pack, but we can pull off a big road ACC win if we find a way to jump out to an early lead and win the turnover margin.
