UVA Thoughts & Captions

The Pack got a much needed win at UVA on Saturday to get back above .500 and give our fading bowl chances a glimmer of hope. The defense played its best game of the season holding the UVA rushing attack to just 124 yards, their lowest total of the season and 69 yards under their season average coming into the game. That was helped by questionable play calling by the Wahoos as they abandoned their power running game way too early, but the defense made the stops when they had to. The UVA quarterbacks have struggled all season and that continued here as they threw for only 125 yards and 3 INTs. All-in-all a very solid effort by the Pack defense

The Pack offense, on the other hand, struggled for most of the game. We had 12 non-scoring drives of 6 plays or less, there were way too many dropped passes, we turned the ball over twice, and we only got one first down the whole third quarter. All of those things kept the Wahoos in the game longer than they probably should have been. In the end, though, we made enough plays to prevail.

With the win TOB improves to a very strong 10-4 (6-1 away) against teams from the Coastal Division. On the contrary, TOB has struggled mightily with a 5-16 (0-11 away) record against teams from our division, the Atlantic. Stuff like that just makes me scratch my head and think WTF? Of course when TOB was asked about this in his weekly press conference yesterday he said he had “no clue” about that and was “just trying to win them all.” Well Coach, try harder because you ain’t getting the job done.

So that’s a brief rundown of my thoughts from the game. We’ll have to play a lot better this week to get a win at Florida State, but we can talk more about that later this week. Let’s go ahead and get to this week’s Pack the Caption (photos by Ethan Hyman/N&O):

Central Michigan Captions

It’s the bye week so I’ve taken a few days off.  I’ve actually tried to work on some posts, but just got nowhere.  My mind has been in bye week mode, just wanting to take it easy and think about NC State football for a week.  So that’s about it.

I’m not going to give my thoughts about Central Michigan other than we probably played our best half of football in the second half, but we still didn’t dominate the Chippewas like we should have.  Hopefully the coaches have had plenty of time this week to look at tape, diagnose our biggest problems, and figure out how to correct them.

So, here are the photos (by Ethan Hyman/N&O) for this … er last … week’s Pack the Caption.  Give me some good ones.

Is the football pink too? Oh shit, missed it!

I may not look good in red, but I can rock some pink.

Hey girl, when you want some of the real Mr. Wolff you let me know!

GameDay at Wisconsin

Yep, ESPN’s College GameDay was in Madison last weekend for the big Wisconsin-Nebraska showdown.  I was watching it while tailgating out at Carter-Finley and I saw this sign.  Honestly, it made me chuckle a little bit.  My buddies over at Frumpzilla tweeted out the above screenshot and I meant to post it, but frankly forgot to.  Yeah, I know having Russell Wilson back this year wouldn’t fix all our problems so save the hate mail.  [Edit: Actually, I've yet to receive hate mail and you really haven't made it as a blogger until you do so please send me all the hate mail you want.]

The big difference between Russell and Glennon is simply this… Russell can put a team on his back and will a team to victory and Glennon, at least so far, has yet to show that he can do that.  With a team that’s struggling like we are that is a huge difference.  I’m happy for Russell, though.  He’s finally in a position where he has a solid team around him and he can really show the country how good a football player he is.  It’s just sad that he went largely unnoticed the past 3 years while he was doing a lot of the same amazing things here at NC State.

I’ll definitely be rooting for him to win the national championship and even the coveted Heisman Trophy.  If you’re a State fan, how can you not?  We’ve never had a Heisman Trophy winner and if Russell can pull it off it that trophy will be 75% NC State’s, right?  I’m an engineer and Mama DFCF was a math teacher so I know my math people.

Also, during ESPN’s College GameDay coverage last week Tom Rinaldi did a very touching piece on Russell following in his father’s footsteps.  I just have to post it here. There’s a good bit of NC State love it there.  Enjoy!

Wheel of Excuses

I’ve had a couple readers ask me to bring back the TOB-O-METER, currently at .491 (27-28) if you’re wondering.  I’m humbled and shocked to have a few readers that have been following this shitty blog for a year.  Unfortunately, I’ve decided to go a different route at this time.  The TOB-O-METER may make a return appearance later in the season, but I have something new.  Hope you’re not disappointed.  I present to you the TOB Wheel of Excuses:

You notice what’s not on the TOB Wheel of Excuses? … coaching … schemes … recruiting … playcalling … motivation … execution … etc.  Those are the real reasons we are sitting here at 2-3 and staring right down the barrel of a losing season.  We just aren’t a very good football team and we’ve been so bad that fewer injuries wouldn’t have made that much of a difference.  Don’t forget, this was supposed to be the easy part of the schedule too.

It’s been well chronicled how TOB is an ex-Marine.  Because of that he is a stoic, conservative, stubborn, demanding coach who runs a football program in much the same way a drill sergeant runs a boot camp.  He’s right and he doesn’t tolerate anybody questioning him about the way he does things, which the media seems to tiptoe around on a weekly basis.

Of course when things are going good he relishes it and never misses a chance to take shots at our rivals.  This, and his 4-0 record against Carolina, is the way he has endeared himself to so many State fans.  When your team is winning, you as a fan will pretty much tolerate anything.  There have even been a few instances in the good times where TOB has taken accountability, evidenced by these quotes from the Wake Forest postgame:

“I’m not going to make excuses.  We had who we had.”

“It certainly would have helped but we didn’t have them.  We have to be able to make plays.”

That is the exception, not the norm, however.  When things start getting tough is usually when TOB succumbs to the pressures and starts looking for excuses.  Once the excuses begin flowing, they come in droves and you wonder if/when they’ll ever end, evidenced by these quotes from the past few weeks:

“On defense, we’ve had too many guys going out hurt.”

“We’re back to the same situation [injuries] we had three years ago.”

“Hopefully there are some more guys who can play next week.”

[Re: Baumann's injury] “When it rains, it pours, and it’s really pouring now.”

“The last two weeks, we were so beat up.”

“The bottom line is that we’ve got to get some guys back.”

Wow!  I honestly can’t believe he said that last one.  The bottom line is our coaches need to do a better job of coaching and our players need to do a better job of executing.  Simple as that.  Football has always been a contact sport and injuries have and will always be part of the equation.  Some years you get fortunate in that area and other years you have to fight harder to get through it.

I don’t know about the rest of Pack Nation, but I am sick and tired of the excuses. It’s year 5 and there has been plenty of time to “change the culture”, “get your guys”, and “implement your system.”  Coach speak is one thing, but I think this takes it a little too far.  I understand not throwing your players/coaches under the bus, but they have to be held accountable too and this just seems to be giving them a free pass.

Bitching and moaning all season about something you have no control over isn’t a good use of time and it isn’t going to help the team get any better either.  It’s time to stop the excuses and start figuring out ways to win some damn football games.

“He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else.”  –Benjamin Franklin

Georgia Tech Captions

Another game against an FBS opponent and another blowout loss.  We were down only 21-14 heading into the 4th quarter, but in the span of 2:22 Georgia Tech finished a 13 play drive with a short touchdown run, returned a Glennon interception for touchdown, and threw a long touchdown pass after we turned the ball over on downs at our own 38 yard line.  We scored two touchdowns in the last 0:34 to make it look close, but Georgia Tech thoroughly dominated this game.

Of course TOB is still blaming everything on the injuries and lack of depth.  We do have injuries, but that’s part of football.  Every team has to deal with injuries to some degree or other.  The good teams overcome injuries with depth built through good recruiting, however, we have been in the bottom third of the ACC recruiting rankings almost every year under TOB.

Enough downer talker for now, here are the photos (by Ethan Hyman/N&O) for this week’s Pack the Caption.  Be creative and give me some good captions.

South Alabama Captions

It’s been a long, tough couple of days in the DFCF household as we’ve been dealing with the death of Mrs. DFCF’s grandpa.  He was a proud Army vet who served our country in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.  It was totally unexpected, but somewhat fitting that he passed away the same weekend that State celebrated Military Appreciation Day.  The two things he was most proud of in life were his country and his family.  He will be missed dearly.

As for our football team, we won Saturday but it sure didn’t look pretty.  We have a lot of issues, on both sides of the ball, that need to be corrected if we still hope to have a successful season.  I’m worried that with the injuries starting to mount that this team is already starting to look for excuses.  No excuses, find a way to win.  With that I’ll leave you with the photos (all by Ethan Hymann/N&O) from the South Alabama game.  Give me some good captions this week.

Look Ma, no hands!!!

Thank you troops!

Hey Coach, you gonna play any defense this year?

Bonus Photo:  Thank you to all the men and women who serve, or have served, in the US Military!  Your bravery, sacrifice, and dedication have made this the greatest country in the world!  I’m disappointed that the 2 troops I was suppose to host at my tailgate never showed up, but I’m glad those of you that made it were able to enjoy a football game at Carter-Finley.  Godspeed to you all!

Wake Forest Captions

Another trip to Winston-Salem and another Wolfpack loss.  This shit is getting old.  It would be one thing if we were talking Alabama, LSU, Ohio State, Virginia Tech, Oregon, etc. … but nope, we’re talking freaking Wake Forest.  This one hurts and may end up costing us a bowl trip.

I’ll breakdown the game tomorrow.  For now let’s do another round of Pack the Caption (all photos by Ethan Hyman/N&O):

More Russell Wilson

News about Russell Wilson playing football this Fall has been like a _________, it keeps coming and coming.  (Fill in the blank … I couldn’t think of anything nondirty.)  Some is old news by now like his visit to Auburn and the Colorado Rockies’ response to his desire to continue playing football.  Some is new news like his upcoming visit to Wisconsin.  Many people have chimed in about this over the past few weeks from ESPN’s Heather Dinich (with a quote from me in there) to the Winston-Salem Journal’s Lenox Rawlings to the N&O’s Luke DeCock to name a few.

The NC State blogosphere has had plenty to say as well:  Riddick & ReynoldsBacking the Pack , and Statefans Nation.  I haven’t conducted a scientific survey, but from everything I’ve seen and heard it appears that Wolfpack Nation seems to be split down the middle on the issue of whether our QB next year should be Russell or Mike Glennon.  The one thing I haven’t seen much of is people ripping Russell … that is until I read the Statefans Nation post linked above.  When I started this blog I gave myself two rules:  #1 Try to stay as positive about NC State football as possible & #2 Do not rip fellow State blogs.

Admittedly, I haven’t been as good about rule #1 as I’d hope to be (mainly due to some inside info I have on the football program), but I’ve held steadfast to rule #2 (I have much love and respect for them all).  Having said that, I have several issues with that Statefans Nation post that I have to touch on.  SFN, no hard feelings?  Can we just consider this a rebuttal and not a rip job?

“Russell wanting to play football this Fall is perfectly acceptable. However, why didn’t Russell just delay signing a pro baseball contract to remain enrolled in school, play baseball for NC State with part-time participation in Spring football so that Tom O’Brien and Mike Glennon, who graduated and could have left NC State play immediately this season, would know exactly where Russell stands on playing college football this Fall? What was the hurry to sign a pro baseball contract especially when his baseball career up until that point was a struggle while he had flourished on the grid iron?”

Seriously?  Why hurry to sign a pro baseball contract?  He had about $250k reasons why to hurry and sign a baseball contract.  How many 21 year old college students would turn that down?  Not many at all.

Also, Russell has stated several times over the past several years that his goal was to play in both the NFL and MLB.  Maybe people just disregarded all that as ‘athlete speak’ (you know … the cousin to ‘coach speak’) but it shows that Russell has been anything but indecisive.  He set his career goals out there for everybody to see, including TOB, and has been faithful to them.  His baseball ‘stock’ was at its peak back in June 2010 so signing the baseball contract was a no-brainer if he wanted to reach those goals.  The bigger question is why did the Rockies draft him so high since his baseball career had been such a struggle up to that point?

“I hope he plays football this Fall. I will pull for his success at Auburn or Wisconsin or wherever he ends up. However, Russell’s continued indecisiveness shows exactly why Tom O’Brien made the right choice in this situation.”

Again, as I mentioned above, Russell has been anything but indecisive.  If there’s anything you could say it’s that he’s been noncommittal.  Maybe, just maybe that was the plan all along, though.  At least what I’ve heard over the past several weeks seems to point that way.  Word is that Russell let TOB know in January that he wanted to come back for the 2011 football season and TOB asked him to keep it quiet until after Spring Practice was over.  Now I don’t know if this is true or not, but I heard it from two different people that have ties to the football program so I feel like there’s at least some truth to it.

It’s far to early for anybody to say whether TOB’s choice was the right one or not.  That will be determined for us over the 2011 and 2012 football seasons.  I’ve thought long and hard about this situation.  I’ve looked at the pros and cons of both sides and could make an argument for either.  I don’t like how TOB handled the situation, but I can’t fault him for his decision (at least not now anyway … we’ll see how the season goes).  Me personally, with what appears to be a weak and winnable ACC in 2011, I’m a gambling man so I’d go all-in with Russell for one season and try to bring home an ACC championship.  There’s plenty of time to figure out what to do in 2012 (Brosius, transfer, Freshman, etc.).  There, my opinion is on ‘the record’ now so feel free to rip me when it looks stupid 6 months from now.

In the end, I love Russell Wilson and I love NC State so I hope this situation works out for both parties.  I can’t believe I’m going to quote Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis, but here goes … “Just win, baby!”  That’s definitely what I’ll be pulling for!

So Long, Russell

Russell Wilson leaves the field after playing his last game for the Pack. (photo by Ethan Hyman/N&O)

It’s official now, Russell Wilson’s NC State football career is over.  TOB had been giving us signs that this day was coming ever since his Signing Day press conference, but the final hammer came down Friday.  NC State granted Russell his release so that he can pursue opportunities in football at another university.  If nothing else the timing of this is absurd.  A day after NC State celebrated Russell’s selection as the Arthur Ashe Jr. Male Sports Scholar of the Year, he’s being shown the door.  Anybody that thinks this decision was made by anybody other than TOB is a little naive.  You can feel the resentment towards Wilson playing baseball dripping from these quotes:

“Russell and I have had very open conversations about his responsibilities respective to baseball and football.  While I am certainly respectful of Russell’s dedication to baseball these last several years, within those discussions I also communicated to him the importance of his time commitment to NC State Football.”

“My staff and I thank him for his contributions as a member of Wolfpack football and to this University and wish him only the best in the future.”

I don’t necessarily disagree with TOB.  In order for our football team to be the best that it can be we need everybody devoted to the program 100%.  Having said that, in an ACC where up to 9 schools will be with new starting QBs next season, it’s gonna be awfully tough to swallow seeing Russell playing football in the fall and it not being for the Wolfpack.  The terms of the release will not let Russell play for another ACC team or anybody else on the Pack’s schedule, but it’s still a lost opportunity.

Who knows how this works out in the long run for both parties, but in the short term it will probably mean 1 or 2 more losses for the Pack this season.  Mike Glennon now not only has the pressure of replacing Wilson, but knowing that TOB ran Wilson off to turn the reigns over to him.  No pressure at all.  TOB has been declaring Glennon is as good as any QB he’s ever coached (the Atlanta Falcons’ Matty Ice included) so for the sanity of Wolfpack fans everywhere let’s hope he’s right.

In true Russell Wilson fashion he was nothing but classy and said all the right things about this:

“Although I remain undecided on the option of playing college football this coming season, I believe it is in the best interest of the players and coaches involved to end any speculation of my return to the Wolfpack. It has become apparent that the time has come for the program to move on without me.”

“I am forever grateful to NC State for allowing me the privilege of participating in athletics for four years. I especially appreciate the cooperation among coaches who allowed me to pursue my dream of playing two sports. I also want to thank the great fans of NC State University. Your love and support was a gift that I appreciated every day and will treasure my entire life.”

“While my immediate plan includes playing professional baseball, I have not closed the door on football. With one more season of college eligibility remaining, I will continue to explore and consider all my options.”

I really enjoyed watching Russell play for the Red & White, even though he frustrated the hell out of me sometimes with his redzone INTs.  As I tweeted yesterday, someone close to the situation said that 3 schools Russell has mentioned are Texas, LSU, and Auburn.  Regardless of what Russell said in the press release, I think he has definitely decided he wants to play football in the fall.

Thanks Russell!  Best wishes as you pursue your baseball and football careers!

[Update 5/1:  Russell talked to the N&O yesterday.  He is "really torn up" about leaving because "NC State means the world" to him.  He also went on to say, "it's heartbreaking that I had to go."  Don't worry Russell, all State fans agree.  This situation just went from bad to way way way worse.  TOB built up a lot of goodwill with the fans after last year's 9-4 season, but this decision has put the bullseye squarely on his back again.  I hope he knows what he's doing or it could get real ugly for him.]

[Update 5/2:  I heard today, from a different source close to the situation, that for Russell to play football this fall he would have to break the conditions of his contract w/ the Colorado Rockies.  I don't want to speculate what that might mean for his baseball career, just want to put that info out there to shed some more light on what all likely went into this decision.]

Butch’s Daddy In The House

The Wolfpack Club does a phenomenal job every year with the Coaches Caravan events.  I love ‘em.  The interaction with the coaches is fun, the food is usually good, and even the hob-knobbing with the big donors is interesting.  Maybe I secretly want to be one of the big donors.  I cracked the 5,000 rank barrier before the age of 30 so I have a good start.  I’m not so sure that I would ever totally fit in with that crowd, though.  Anyway let’s move on to the events of the night.

The elegant Carmel Country Club was the locale.  Alex Browning, Wolfpack Club District 5 Chairman, welcomed everybody and then Phillip Wood, Wolfpack Club Associate Director, gave a few introductory words.  Wood announced the attendance at 305 and said the Ram’s Club even in Charlotte was also tonight and they only had 210 people.  Of course that got a lot of applause from the Wolfpack faithful.

The event then started with Craig Anderson, Assistant AD for Compliance, going over some brief guidelines for everybody.  Basically his message was … DON’T give benefits to any prospective recruits or current student athletes.

Next up was AD Debbie Yow.  Her first comment was to ask Craig, “so does that mean we can’t pay for recruit trips to Miami?”  Debbie is not afraid to throw out some zingers.  To use one of her own words … I love her chutzpah.  She went on to talk about how lucky and blessed she feels to be back “home” here completing the Yow legacy at NC State.  She didn’t use the word legacy, but that’s what it is (hall of fame coach, All-American player, and what could be the best AD in school history).

Debbie got a little emotional when talking about the passing of her sister Kay.  She told a story how their other sister Susan and herself were deciding how to split up all of Kay’s things.  Debbie got Kay’s onyx ring and Susan got all the NC State pins.  After Debbie became the NC State AD Susan gave her every one of Kay’s NC State pins.  You could just feel her love for NC State in her voice.  We really couldn’t have a better AD right now.  I love Debbie Yow!

Debbie went on to briefly talk about the coaching search.  She did not like how the national media tried to influence the search by badmouthing State fans.  She thinks they are afraid of us becoming a factor and her message to them was, “we are here to upset the apple cart.”  She discussed how she first met Coach Gottfried as a freshman at Oral Roberts because he was dating one of her basketball players.  She joked about having meetings with him to stop fighting with her player because when they did it affected her play on the court.

Debbie also threw in that we are going back to STATE on all our team’s jerseys like in the past.  She said people will know it’s NC State.  She ended with reiterating that it won’t be easy, but she will continue refusing to accept the status quo until we have a top 25 athletics department.

Tony Haynes was on hand to emcee the fire side chat style sessions with the coaches.  After taking the mic Tony’s first comment was to dispute Phillip Wood’s assertion that the Ram’s Club meeting tonight had 210 people … he said that was their Spring Game attendance.  *badum-CHING*

Coach Harper was the first coach up.  She talked about knowing this season was going to be tough when she took the job and then it only got tougher after losing 6 players to injury.  She talked about how the Duke loss was her toughest loss as a head coach and the UNC win was one of her most fulfilling wins.  Coach Harper’s intensity was very evident and I think it’s just a matter of time before she has our women’s basketball team among the best in the ACC.

Coach Gottfried, on his first Wolfpack Club Caravan stop, was greeted very warmly by the Wolfpack faithful.  His first order of business was to ask Debbie since he got the blame for his girlfriend’s bad games at Oral Roberts where was the thanks for all the games where she got 20-20 because that was his doing too.

Coach Gottfried then talked about his assistant coaches and how he’s really excited to be working with all of them.  He thinks our roster has some good players, but we need to learn discipline and how to play harder.  He went on to say we could be short some bodies next year (only 9 scholarship players) so they are looking to add one more player in this year’s class if they can get the right guy.  They won’t reach for somebody, though, because it’s not always the guys you miss that hurt your program, but the guys you give a scholarship to that aren’t good enough.

Coach Gottfried was asked specifically about C.J. Leslie and he bluntly said that C.J. wasn’t good enough for the NBA right now and that he needed to come back and work every day on getting better and playing the game the right way.  He’s still working hard on building relationships with the players and their families, but that everything is going well so far.  He really hit home by saying that he understands what we want and he will be working as hard as he can to give us that.  It could just be my red colored glasses, but the more I hear Coach Gottfried the more I love him.  I think he’s the guy that will get us back to where we should be.

TOB was the event headliner.  Tony Haynes introduced him with, “I know all of TOB’s children and since none of them are named Butch why is it that everywhere I go I hear Coach O’Brien referred to as Butch’s Daddy?”  Naturally that led to the largest applause of the night.

As has been the case for months now, two of the hottest topics were how we are going to replace Nate Irving and Russell Wilson in both leadership and on the field performance.  TOB said Coach Tenuta wants his best player at MLB and he is real happy with how Audie Cole looked in Spring Practice so he’s not that worried about the defense.  TOB talked about how Mike Glennon has as much talent as any of the 4 NFL QBs (Matt Ryan, Matt Hasselbeck, Tim Hasselbeck, and Brian St. Pierre) he has coached in the past so he feels comfortable heading into next year.  I got the feeling that TOB was just happy to have his starting QB in Spring Practice for the first time in years.

TOB likes the depth and experience on the roster.  He feels like we are finally in a position to handle a rash of injuries if needed.  The one position he did express concerns about was the WRs.  As a unit they are faster than anything TOB has had here at State, but “that doesn’t do us any good if we can’t catch the ball.”  He was also asked about the offensive line and he feels like they are ready to become one of the strengths of the team.

TOB said he had just turned in his goal for the 2011 season to Debbie and that it is to go 14-0.  Debbie took the mic back and said she asked him for a realistic goal and his response was that his goal is to always go 14-0 and win a national championship because if that’s not your goal then it will never happen.  I’m admittingly not a huge TOB fan, but that’s because of some behind the scenes stuff.  On the field he’s a proven winner and I like where he has the program right now.  I want more, though, namely an ACC championship and a BCS bowl.

TOB’s best comment of the night was how he learned the ABC (anybody but Carolina) way while an assistant coach at Virginia and that he’s never wavered from it since, especially now being at NC State.  I think it’s even stronger now.  That’s the one thing that I really love about him.  He understands our hatred towards UNC and really embraces the rivalry.  He’s never afraid to take shots at them.  You gotta love that as long as he backs it up by beating their ass every year.  What is it now? … 1,621 days and counting (see top of sidebar).  I never get tired of just watching that number grow bigger and bigger every day.

The event was nice and everybody had a great time.  Kudos to the Wolfpack Club for all the work they do!  Not just with these Coaches Caravan events, but throughout the year.  We really are blessed to have one of the best donor organizations in the country.  Go Pack!
